DeepWind Weekly Aug 2025 week4

This week, DeepWind Weekly highlights three major developments shaping Japan’s offshore wind sector.

News Highlights

1. Mitsubishi-led Consortium Exits Three Offshore Wind Projects

Mitsubishi Corp. and partners announced withdrawal from Noshiro/Mitane/Oga, Yurihonjo, and Choshi sites.
Ultra-low bid prices combined with inflation, FX volatility, and rising interest rates undermined project viability. Re-tendering will be required, marking a turning point for Japan’s renewable energy strategy.

2. Goto Floating Installation Demonstration

In Goto, Nagasaki, a new method was tested: assembling turbines onshore, transporting them offshore, and slotting them into foundations.
The approach reduces weather-related risks and costs, and could support deployment of 240m rotor-class turbines in the future.
